Gaya: With the Lok Sabha polls knocking at the door, 79-year-old NDA candidate Jitan Ram Manjhi of Hindustani Awaam Morcha-Secular (HAM-S) is gearing up to try his luck for the fourth time to emerge victorious in the Gaya Lok Sabha seat which is scheduled to go to polls in the first phase on April 19.
He is set to lock horns with Lok Sabha debutant Kumar Sarvjeet (49) – two-time Bodh Gaya MLA (2015 and 2020) – of RJD this year. Sarvjeet has served as the minister of tourism and agriculture departments in the Bihar government. The face-off between the duo is dubbed as a ‘fight between two generations’ for the Gaya seat.
In 1991, Manjhi contested the Gaya Lok Sabha against Sarvajeet’s father, Rajesh Kumar. Then, Manjhi, who was with the Congress, got 2,54,282 votes (41.6%) against 3,08,077 (50.4%) votes bagged by Kumar (Janata Dal).
In 2014, the veteran leader again contested the Gaya seat and lost to Hari Manjhi of BJP. While Hari bagged 3,26,230 votes (21.7%), Manjhi, who contested the election on an RJD ticket, secured 2,10,726 votes (14%).
